Lake Bluff, Illinois. A new house raised on the foundation of a 1950s ranch, stucco from the ground to the gables, standing where the road comes into the east side of the village.

The house from the road in autumn: white stucco gables with dark green shutters set back behind clipped hedges, a maple in full colour on the lawn, and an ivy-grown arched hood over the front door.

The project

Built on the foundation of a 1950s ranch, this new house in the English Cottage style tradition is finished in stucco throughout, and warmly addresses the southern entry point into east Lake Bluff.

The house has a ground floor primary bedroom, a gourmet kitchen and a family room, with three bedrooms on the second floor.

The front of the house in winter, seen past the trunk of a mature tree: white stucco gables with dark green shutters and green-edged eaves, an arched hood over the front door, and a covered porch running away to the right under a snow-covered roof. — Stucco is carried over every wall and every gable, and the only colour on the house is in the shutters and the edge of the eaves. Under snow it comes down to very nearly its outline, which is a fair test of whether the shapes were right.
